CoP Germany: Occupational safety needs to be a key part of training and education in agriculture

The German CoP met online on 2 April 2024 to discuss one of the its three main focus areas: “Competence”. where they discussed how to bring occupational safety issues closer to educational institutions, as well as agricultural workers, especially young ones.

The participants identified a lack of occupational safety and health topics in curricula at all education levels, from vocational training to universities and scientific institutions. They pointed out that an integrative approach that includes education about regulations and develops risk competence should be implemented at all levels.

In addition to educational institutions, safety regulations and practices should also be considered in companies and farms. Practical experience and peer –to-peer learning play a key role in awareness raising, integration and implementation of occupational health in workplaces. This also includes training tailored for family members working on farms, and especially seasonal and unskilled workers.
More effort is also needed to make occupational safety more interesting to young people and there should be more attention given to the advertising of existing training programmes, such as ones promoted by the SVLFG
