CoP Romania: Modernisation and revitalisation of sheep farming

Jun 19, 2024 | News

On 31 May 2024, the SafeHabitus CoP in Romania held its third in-person meeting at the Didactic Farm of the Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, bringing together various stakeholders from the sheep farming sector, representatives from local institutions and agriculture and mountain science experts. The event provided an opportunity to strengthen working relationships within the CoP and explore new paths for collaboration among members.

The event’s agenda revolved around applied exercises aimed at establishing the Farm Health and Safety Needs Register in Romania, with a special focus on sheep farming sector. Participants identified the need to modernise sheep farming in Romania, primarily through increased investments in new technologies.
The revitalisation of the sector is also needed, as it is facing labour shortages. Sheep farming carries its own physical and mental challenges for workers in the sector. Education and training programmes focused on health and safety in farms can address some of these challenges, but better understanding of these challenges is needed. In addition, the agricultural workforce is relatively old, and many agricultural workers migrate seasonally to work in other EU countries.

The final part of the event included a visit to a newly constructed pavilion at the Didactic Farm, where CoP members had access to research and education facilities and laboratories of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Food Industry, and Environmental Protection.
